Digital Disease Awareness campaign for an extremely rare disease.
SCPCD (Severe Congenital Protein C Deficiency)
SCPCD (Severe Congenital Protein C Deficiency) is an extremely rare disease. If undiagnosed, it is a lethal disease that affects new-borns within the first few hours of birth. As this disease is so rare it is not widely recognised and is easily confused with a primary clinical symptom (Purpura fulminans) that is usually associated with other causes such as infection. There is a need to ensure that all stakeholders involved are aware of how to correctly diagnose this disease so appropriate management can be administered in a timely manner.
With Purpura fulminans being most common and visible symptom usually associated with Sepsis, SCPCD is rarely considered during differential diagnosis in neonates. So our job was to educate HCPs about this disease at a global level, mainly using digital channels.

We used the mUx methodology to create the most efficient digital ecosystem including the SCPCD website. Two workshops were done with our mUx team composed of User eXperience consultants and Medical Project consultants. Key people at Shire were of course involved and provided very accurate insights about the targets’ behaviours so we did not have to conduct ‘User Research’.
The result was the creation of SCPCD.org, which is mobile responsive, and is the first global (excluding US) disease awareness website in this therapeutic area. The objective was to provide relevant, concise and accessible information to HCPs. This type of information provided could help all relevant stakeholders to diagnose and manage patients in critical care, affected by this disease.
